Asa is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and recording artiste. She was born in Paris, France to Nigerian parents and grew up in Alagbole, a border town near Lagos. Her career as a musician would only take off some 20 years later when she returned to Paris, a city she spends a good deal of her time in.
Asa started recording music in Lagos and Cobhams Asuquo was an early collaborator. She was soon signed to Naïve records, a French music label and her first album, Asa (Asha) was released in 2007. The record was an instant hit in Nigeria spawning indelible socio-political anthems like Fire on the mountain and Jailer. Asa also performed decently on the world music circuit and in 2008, Asa received the prestigious Prix Constantin in France in 2008.
Born on 17, September 1982, Asa is presently one of Africa’s biggest musical exports. With 3 top selling albums to her credit, she is a firm favourite among festival organisers. Her latest album, Bed of stone was released in 2014 and peaked at number 38 on the French album charts.
