The hypeman is that person, who is a backup rapper or singer and supports the main act, as he aims to increase the audience’s excitement by getting them pumped up and engaged at all times during the performance.
Here are three of the finest in the land over the course of the years.
- Special ED – There is no one familiar with the music industry who doesn’t know ED, that huge guy that moves around quite well on stage despite his size and is largely seen hanging around the HKN gang these days. He first came into the limelight following his efforts at the MTV Base VJ Search where he was a losing finalist, then he teamed up with Mo Hits as their official hypeman, after the break-up he worked with D’Banj a bit. Nowadays, he is usually the first on stage gearing the crowd up and preparing the ground for the artist who is usually Davido, and then he backs him up singing his lyrics line for line and ED does a really good job of it.
- Do2dtun – Cool Fm’s OAP Dotun Kayode is another who over the past couple of years has made a name for himself as a hypeman to watch out for in the game. Dotun has carved his own niche with his style and ability to engage the crowd, be it at a Star Mega Jam nationwide concert or when he is busy with Olamide and Pepenazi to dropping skits on albums, Do2dtun does it all brilliantly.
- 3. Jimmie – Another OAP who I actually knew talking Sports, Beat FM’s in-house sports presenter Jimmie went from the studios to doing Industry Night and from there graduated into being D Banj’s hypeman while also doing some for DJ Spinall, Jimmie can be cool, Jimmie can be crazy but on stage, Jimmie is a beast.
