Iyanya Mbuk is an afro pop singer, songwriter and music label head who gained prominence after winning the MTN sponsored Project Fame West Africa reality competition in 2008. Born on 31, October 1986, Iyanya who was born and raised in Calabar, started out singing in school and church choirs.
Citing Craig David and R Kelly as his key musical influences, Iyanya initially started out professionally as a rapper but embraced singing after honing his musical skills performing karaoke at local bars. He participated in Project Fame after his buddy KCee had convinced him to.
Post Project Fame, Iyanya released his debut album My Story in 2009 but the project failed to take off commercially due to promotion and distribution challenges.
He rebounded in 2012 with the ubiquitous earworm Kukere, inspired from his local Etighi dance. Kukere and a whole new image reinvention did the trick and catapulted Iyanya to A-list status. His glossy second album followed shortly after and did significantly more business than his debut. His switch from R&B to Afrobeats proved profitable for him as he has scored multiple endorsement deals.
