Whether you’re looking for a new sound or anticipating new music from your favorites, 2016 is definitely set to be a memorable year in Nigerian music. Here are some of the albums we expect to drop this year.
Despite the lukewarm reception to his Ayo album in 2014, the singer had a great 2015. He worked alongside producers like Naughty Boy and Major Lazer, then bagged a feature with R&B legend, R.Kelly. Wizkid’s failure to drop a promised 10-Track EP in October 2015, has only increased the pressure on the Ojuelegba crooner to release new material. Wizzy’s brand has grown bigger since he released Ayo. He has also gained exposure to new sounds and influences we can’t wait to hear.
In his constant battle for relevance alongside the equally famous Wizkid, Davido will have to bring more than well-mixed singles and a feature with Meek Mill this year. Davido launched his career officially in 2011 and has remained in the industry with a myriad of singles and features. The singer was supposed to release his sophomore album in 2015. Reports surfaced, however, that he pushed back his album release to 2016 for unknown reasons. While we were all upset by this delay, we are excited about the effect a 2016 album roll out alongside Wizkid will have on Nigerian music.
In Don Jazzy we trust as we expect Mavins starlet, Reakado Banks to release an album this year. The singer co-wrote anthems Dorrobucci and Adaobi before working on singles, Katapot, Corner and the more recent Sugar Baby. Banks has tipped 2016 for an album release and we’re patiently waiting.
YBNL protégé Lil Kesh should be ready now more than ever to release an album. The rapper came into limelight after releasing Shoki in 2014. The remix of Shoki and the success of his follow-up single Efejoku has sealed his place as a certified hit maker.
CDQ is a DJ favourite who came into limelight working alongside producer MasterKraft on the song Indomie. The rapper has found success with his own party starting singles Wobi and Salaaro. CDQ will be expected to drop an album filled with more party-starting jams this year.
Patoranking’s distinct style and sound might have made him a crowd favorite within a short while. The release of an album to chronicle the success of singles like Girlie O and My Woman will be adequate to seal his place in the Nigeran music industry.
Tonto Dikeh’s foray into music may have been negatively received, it however kept the Nollywood star in the news for a while. Riding on such controversy can be good for her if she goes back to the drawing board to make better music. A good album from Tonto Dikeh will definitely be a music defining shocker.
Songbird Simi released two successful singles, Open and Close and Jamb Question in 2015. We will love to hear more of her sonorous voice on an official LP.
Everybody loves Adekunle Gold. The release of his most recent singles, Orente and Pick Up, has been met with highly positive reception. We really can no longer endure being teased by this singer’s genius.
Abuja based producer and singer Tekno has gained prominence in Nigerian music since he released his single Holiday in 2013. In recent times, Tekno released singles, Duro and Wash. He has also worked alongside names like Ice Prince, Phyno and Flavour. A 2016 album will definitely be in order.
MasterKraft has groomed his brand for great things over the last 3 years. The producer has spun hits for artists like Timaya, CDQ, Iyanya and Wizkid. The success of his single Finally which featured Sarkodie and Flavour N’abania has left us clamoring from a full album from the musical maestro.
G-Worldwide as a label has been responsible for the rise of Woju crooner, Kiss Daniel. The singer’s failure to impress with his follow-up single Laye almost had him tagged as a one-hit wonder until he was featured on DJ Shabsy’s Rabba alongside label mate Sugarboy. This anthem is a clear signal that a compilation album by the G-Worldwide label will be highly successful.
Tiwa Savage was silent for most of 2015 as a result of her baby mama duties. The songstress marked her return with the surprise drop of her R.E.D album in December 2015. We are however greedy for more Tiwa and we expect a 2016 album will be sufficient to make up for lost time.
Deaf crooner, Eva Alordiah promised to drop her already announced 1960 album in the middle of January 2015. Due to unknown reasons, the album never received a full roll-out. We believe Eva is currently in the studio, working to further curate the album she will release later this year.
After successful singles like Awww and Falling For You. Mavin songbird Di’ja, will be expected to release a full L.P this year. Her Reggaeton and Afro-beats fusion gives her a unique style we only want to hear more of.
