#1 In The City – Brymo
Brymo’s dedication to making relevant music hasn’t dwindled over the years, he never hesitates to prove this fact either. The former Chocolate City singer holds nothing back in this critically acclaimed soundtrack to the movie No Good Turn.
#2 Godwin (Rock Cover)- Clay
Over the years, Clay has blessed us with rock covers of mainstream songs. This rock cover for Korede Bello’s Godwin only improves the aesthetics of the Mavin anthem.
#3 Her – Milli and Kimani
Somewhere between their decision to release the album exclusively on Star Music app and M.I’s new management of the label, Chocolate City’s The Indestructible Choc Boi Nation (TICBN) album went mostly unnoticed in many parts of the country. Nonetheless, the album had some solid songs like this beautiful Milli and Victoria Kimani duet titled Her.
#4 Soldier – Falz (featuring Simi)
Label mates and frequent collaborators Simi and Falz have never faltered in their joint ability to create brilliance. Soldier tells the story of a by force by fire relationship between Simi and Falz. If you haven’t copped the Stories That Touch album this song was featured on, you might want to change your mind after listening to this song.
#6 Ass Questions – PayBac
Rapper, PayBac may not have gotten the exposure he needs with his third consecutive EP, but the quality of his music hasn’t changed. Ass Questions is the seventh track on his Other Side of the Radio mixtape.
#7 Mainland Bridge – Moti Cakes, M.I
M.I personally carried this song on this shoulders by tapping into a sleek laid back version of himself we haven’t seen much of since his M.I.2 LP. This song is also featured on the TICBN album, so you might want to consider giving the whole LP a listen.
#8 Heartfelt – Milli and Koker
This is another brilliant song featured on the Chocolate City compilation album. Koker and Milli might have supported the song with great vocals, but most credit goes to producer Reinhard for the sleek instrumentals.
#8 Hello – Praiz (Cover)
The rest of the world hasn’t stopped replying to Adele’s Hello, so this might just be “another hello cover “ but check it out anyway.
#9 Cleo – Tay
As we return to the age of good music and genre purists, meet Tay a core ambassador of the R&B genre. Cleo was released earlier this year with relatively warm, reception, give it a listen of your own.
#10 Walk In The Sky – Falz, Chyn.
Falz and Chyn have been releasing singles from their unreleased Starsky and Hutch Project since 2014. Walk In The Sky is an alternative rap version of a 2006 song of the same name by UK electronic producer, Bonobo. Check it out.
#11 Mma Mma – Waje
Waje’s Mma Mma was one of the few high life songs by a female artist for the whole year. According to its press release, this song is a tribute to Waje’s grandmother who passed in the June of last year.
#12 All I Need To Know – 2face, Vannesa Mdee
Coke Studio Africa kicked off their third season with a bang. The first episode of the live show featured an original composition by 2face and Tanzanian songbird, Vanessa Mdee. The combination of live vocals from the talented duo merged with a catchy hook and great lyrics produced a beautiful song. The video of their performance is currently the most viewed for the season on the Coke Studio Africa YouTube channel. An official studio version has not been released, but we will be however willing to support any petition demanding Coke Studio gift this musical gem to us.
#13 Awww (Cover) – Johnny Drille
Project Fame Academy ex-student, Johnny Drille voiced beautiful lyrics on this cover of Di’Ja’s soulful love song, Awww. While we are not sure if we fully approve of the remix, the acoustic touch Drille adds to the song is amazing.
#14 Love and Liquor – Falz, Chyn
This is another song from the Starsky and Hutch Project, we recommend you check out.
#15 Wish List – Leriq, Wande Coal.
Leriq’s Lost Sounds album had some of the best-produced songs out of Nigeria last year. We fault Aristokrat Records’ bad PR and management for the poor performance of this album. Leriq features Wande Coal, who voices nearly ethereal vocals on this mellow Afro-pop song.
#16 Smell of Success – Leriq, SDC, Suté and Tay.
#17 Nephilim – Boogey, Eva, Tay
Nephilim features rap diva Eva and R&B boy wonder, Tay. The song chronicles a love story between two poorly matched people.
#18 Take You Higher – Khali Abdul, VHS Safari
Coming off VHS Safari and Khali Abdul’s A.R.T Project album is this lead single which features Darling Din. The group recently got signed by the Chocolate City music group so we can definitely expect more from them this year.
#19 All I Need Is You – Leriq, Shaydee, Redsan
This is another great song from Leriq’s Lost Sounds album. (We are not getting paid for this promo, just get the album abeg)
#20 Chairman Medley – Ink Edwards
M.I Abaga’s mentee Ink Edwards, had a great 2015 musically. Public reception to his music, however, was generally subpar. Nonetheless, the rapper does something wonderful on this mashup of songs from M.I’s critically acclaimed Chairman album. Check it out below.
