SplashJosh_Carolina_CoverThe word lyricism is almost synonymous to the name of the likes of Mode 9 in our industry, with an endless lyrical bank and a long list of Headies Lyricist of the Roll awards to back up this claim.

Over the years though, a host of new cats have popped up on the scene and it seems for once the Mathematical Sege’s hold on the lyrical claim may just be under threat.

We examine 3 young cats that are also holding it down lyrically.

  1. Boogey – Much has been said about this fiery emcee, seen as the savior of rap in many quarters, the light skinned rapper impresses with his lyrics on every single and features, peep his two mixtapes ARTificial Intelligence and T.I.N.A.A to clear your doubts.

Notable songs: Sanctum, His verse on Mathematics (Lord V)

  1. Poe – An affiliate of the SDC clan, Poe also has it going lyrically, though he is yet to drop a full project, his singles and guest verses have gotten him many props from fans and critics.

Notable songs: His verse on Falz the bad guy’s Marry Me, Send it my way, Koyewon

  1. Splashjosh – One of my favorite underground lyricists, dropped an impressive mixtape titled Schoolboys (The first chapter) where he served some offerings of his lyrical ability, Splash is an all round dope rapper who makes good music without comprising his lines.

Notable song: Bitter Truth, Letter to Success, Word from Moms
