We already told you 2016 would be a great year for music. It’s barely a month into the year and big things are already happening.

After a series of cryptic tweets about his music and career moves, Davido broke the internet yesterday night. The singer published photos of himself and his team in the office of Sony BMG music with the tweet below.

The singer follows up with a series of tweets about making Africa proud and leaving a mark on the continent.

The internet has been abuzz with the news since yesterday with many industry experts and music pundits praising Davido’s new attempt to put Nigerian music on the map. As we await the full details of the record deal, here are 5 quick facts about his Sony BMG music and Davido.

1.The deal is not the first of its kind.

The air of excitement around him may have stopped him from cross-checking the facts, but Davido is clearly not the first Nigerian artiste to be signed on by Sony music and its affiliated record labels. Nigerian songbird Nneka was signed to the label in 2003 and is still on the label till date. Similarly, D’banj inked a distribution deal with the record label in 2012. However, it is important to note that Sony music and a host of other international record labels were prominent in Nigerian entertainment in the 90s and Davido’s deal may be the first of its kind global deal, we have had in a long time.

2. The deal has delayed his album.

According to Davido, he put the release of his sophomore album B.A.D.D.E.S.T on hold, due to the unfinalized proceeding of the deal taking place at the time.

3. Did someone say a million dollars in cash?

The number of zeros on the new record deal have not been officially revealed, but Davido did hint about the surrealism of seeing a million dollars in cash.

Despite being an OBO in his own right, with the excitement in his tone, the money must have been a sight to behold.

4. Efe Omogbeni was there.

For those of you who don’t know, Efe Omogbeni is one of Africa’s biggest A & R (artists and repertoire) agents, responsible for scouting talents. Among his successes are Akon, Zander Bleck, Enrique Iglesias and Parker Ighile. He recently went into a joint Venture deal with Sony/ATV Music publishing. A company co-owned by Sony and the Micheal Jackson estate. With his past affiliations with Nigerian artists like D’banj and Don Jazzy, we have no doubt he was a major instrument to closing the deal.

5. Collaboration with Adekunle Gold may be underway.

As congratulations were being sent to Davido in the spirit of the moment, blogger Omojuwa tweeted at Davido demanding a collaboration with Adekunle Gold. Immediately the singer replied with the word “Done.” He also admitted Adekunle Gold’s smash hit Pick up is his favourite song at the moment. We can only look forward the result of their collaboration.
