Just when we were getting prepped to crown Wizkid as Africa’s most successful Indie king, fresh reports reveal the StarBoy may just have bagged an international deal of his own. According to Pulse.ng, Wiz may be looking at a better deal than Davido’s—who notably boasted that his distribution deal with SonyATV was the first of its kind offered to any African.
“There’s something big coming up for Wizkid” A source revealed to Pulse.ng “It happened while he was in America. The deal will be the biggest ever signed by an African, and signifies progress for the music business on the continent.” Though the source failed to confirm Sony’s involvement in the deal, several media sources have hinted the label’s involvement with Wiz. This is against the backdrop of industry speculations that Universal Music also showed interest in Wizkid’s music. Pulse.ng’s source ,however, added that Wizkid would be unveiled by his new management in a grand style in the coming months if the deal comes to fruition.
While some of this comes as fresh news, we can’t say it was unexpected. Wizkid has come to global attention in recent times for a number of reasons including major international features and festival headlines, from our prediction, it was only a matter of time before a label considered him to be worth their money. A bigger label will shoulder some of the push and pull responsibilities of getting Wizkid airplay to a global audience. The singer already has an active following, getting heard by more people will tie up all necessary loose ends needed for his brand to attract more attention in foreign markets.
We calmly await further developments, but ladies and gentlemen, let’s raise our glasses to cheer, Ojuelegba to the World.
