Wizkid, Yemi Alade up for International Act award as 2016 BET Awards rolls out nominees list

The Black Entertainment Television network (BET) has earmarked the beginning of the international award season for this year by rolling out nominees for the 2016 BET awards.

Drake unsurprisingly leads the pack with nominations in 9 categories. Beyonce and Rihanna come in at  second place with  5 nominations each, leaving the third place position to a tie between Chris Brown and newcomer Bryson Tiller.

For Best International Act: Africa, Wizkid and Yemi Alade are re-nominated for their third and second times respectively. They will go up against South Africa’s AKA, Black Coffee and Cassper Nyovest, Tanzania’s Diamond Platnumz, Ghanaian songbird Mzvee (Ghana) and Ivorian singer, Serge Beynaud.

Though Yemi Alade’s first nomination went to Ghanaian dancehall singer Stonebwoy last year, the singer may stand a better chance at impressing the panel this year with the success of her Mama Africa album.

However, all eyes are on fellow Nigerian nominee Wizkid whose recent victories include topping the Billboard 100, a relatively successful world tour and headlining some of the biggest music festivals in the world. With a portfolio that already has collaboration credits with Drake, R.Kelly, Chris Brown, Major Lazer amongst others, a BET win may just be another trophy in his room of endless wins in the last few months.

BET Awards was created in 2001 to celebrate African Americans and other ethnic minorities in the fields of sports, arts, film and music. The ceremony has since held every year. This years edition will hold at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on the 26th of June.
