#WCW: Stormrex is not your average industry newbie

Our woman crush this Wednesday is Stormrex and boy does she have a success story to tell.

Long before Penthauz songstress Stormrex featured on M.I Abaga’s Bullion Van or supplied vocals to Reminisce’s Local rappers, the singer was one of a trinity from a pop girl group called Desperate Chicks.

Scratch the Nollywood leanings of their group name and focus on their music. The trio of Ursula Ice, Barbie and Stormrex were only a good marketing strategy shy of being Nigeria’s premier  girl power group.  The group sang primarily in Igbo language and found fame in Enugu and other Eastern states.

In 2008, the group dropped their critically acclaimed  debut album Tell Dem, before disbanding for unknown reasons to pursue solo careers. Desperate Chicks still have a cult following of fans till date who believe there is still hope for the group’s reunion.

After a brief hiatus, Stormrex kick-started her solo music career again in 2011 before getting signed to Penthauz records, alongside frequent collaborator, Phyno. Her career has been on a steady rise since with myriad of great singles and guest features.

The re-branding and return of Stormrex are a beautiful story of persistence and triumph. It highlights her development as an artiste, whose talent has survived the tests of time, label politics, and poor marketing strategies.
